Before you start

Grinding grout makes fine silica dust. Wear a dust mask and eye protection, and keep the bathroom fan running.

What to buy — untick anything you have

Tile

2 bags of grout, 10 lbSanded for joints 1/8 in and wider, unsanded for thinner ones. Match the color to the photo or sample the customer sends.
1 bottle of grout sealer

Supplies

1 tube of 100% silicone kitchen and bath caulkSilicone, not acrylic, and a color close to the grout. It goes in the corners and along the tub.
1 bottle of mold and mildew cleaner

Tools — already ticked off, since most people have them

How it goes · about a weekend · some experience

Scrape the old grout out of every joint to at least half its depth, without chipping the tile edges.
Vacuum the dust out of the joints and wipe the wall down.
Pack the new grout in diagonally with the float, a few square feet at a time.
Wipe the haze off with a barely damp sponge before it sets, and let it cure for a few days before showering.
Seal the grout, and run silicone in the inside corners and along the tub instead of grout.
