  1. Find the studs and mark them floor to ceiling. Shelving hangs off studs, not off drywall.
  2. Fix the first upright plumb, checking it with the level rather than against the wall — walls are not straight.
  3. Hang the rest from a level line across the top, every second stud.
  4. Clip the brackets in at the heights you want and lay the boards on.
  5. Load the heavy things low. A tall shelf full of paint tins is a tipping hazard.
