Before you start
Call 811 before running a sod cutter or digging anywhere new. It is free and takes a couple of days. A pallet of sod is heavy — lift pieces with your legs and take breaks in the heat.

Strip the old grass and weeds with the sod cutter, then rake the ground smooth and fill the low spots with topsoil.
Spread the starter fertilizer and water the soil lightly the day before the sod arrives.
Lay the first row along a straight edge like a driveway, then stagger the joints like brickwork on every row after.
Butt the pieces tight without stretching them, and cut around beds and curves with the utility knife.
Roll it once so the roots touch soil, then water until the soil underneath is wet.
Water every day for two weeks and stay off it until it will not lift when you tug a corner.
