Trim any torn paper and loose bits from the edge of the hole with the utility knife.
Stick the patch over the hole, centered, and press it flat.
Spread a thin coat of compound over it, feathering it out a few inches past the edge.
Let it dry, sand it lightly, and put on a second thin coat wider than the first.
Sand smooth, prime the patch, and paint it to match.
