Shut it off first

Turn off the breaker and check every wire with a non-contact voltage tester before you touch anything. Only fit one where a neutral wire is already present. Call a licensed electrician if there is no neutral, you find aluminum wiring, no ground, scorched wires, or anything that is not like-for-like. Some Arkansas cities require a permit for electrical work, so check with your city if unsure.

How it goes · about an hour · confident

Turn off the breaker, take the plate off, and check every wire in the box with the voltage tester.
Look at the back of the box for a neutral: usually a bundle of white wires joined under a connector. If there is none, stop and return the switch.
Photograph how the old switch is connected, then connect the smart switch the same way plus the neutral, following the instructions in its box.
Fold the wires back neatly, screw the switch in, fit the plate, and turn the breaker back on.
