Before you start

A floating shelf hangs its whole load off a few screws. Put them into studs, keep heavy books off shelves held only by anchors, and do not hang them over a bed.

How it goes · about an afternoon · some experience

Find the studs and mark them. Plan the shelves so each bracket crosses at least one, better two.
Hold the bracket against the wall, level it, and mark the holes.
Screw the bracket into the studs, adding a toggle anchor only where a hole misses.
Slide the shelf over the bracket rods and fix it with the screws underneath.
