Before you start
Sand every edge and picket end smooth. Use untreated cedar, not pressure-treated wood, on a surface kids play on with mud and pretend food. Anchor it to a fence or wall so it cannot tip when a kid climbs it, and have the grown-up run the saws.

Cut the legs and rails and build two side frames, with the back legs taller to hold the backsplash.
Join the side frames with rails at counter height, about 24 in for a preschooler, and near the bottom for a shelf.
Screw pickets across the counter, the shelf and the backsplash, then trace the bowl upside down on the counter and cut the hole a little inside the line.
Sand every edge, corner and picket end, and screw the hooks into the backsplash.
Set it against a fence or wall and fix it there with the L-brackets so it cannot tip forward.
