Likely causes — tick the parts you want

  1. A burned-out bulb

    most likely · Most people can do this

    How to check: Have someone watch the back of the car while you press the brake, or back up to a window at night. One dark light on one side is almost always the bulb.

  2. A blown fuse

    possible · Most people can do this

    How to check: If all the brake lights are out at once, check the brake light fuse listed on the fuse box lid or in the owner’s manual.

  3. A failed brake light switch

    possible · Doable with tools and a free afternoon

    How to check: If the bulbs and fuse are good but no brake lights work, the small switch above the brake pedal may have failed.
