The engine air filter and the cabin air filter are two of the easiest things to change yourself, usually with no tools.

    How to check: Open the air filter box on top of or beside the engine and hold the filter up to a light. If it is dark gray and light barely shows through, replace it.

  2. A dirty cabin air filter

    How to check: Empty the glovebox and drop it down to reach the cabin filter on most cars. Leaves, gray dust or a musty smell mean it is time.
