Likely causes — tick the parts you want

  1. A worn or glazed serpentine belt

    most likely · Doable with tools and a free afternoon

    How to check: With the engine off, look at the ribbed side of the belt. Cracks across the ribs, missing chunks or a shiny glazed surface mean it is due.

  2. A weak belt tensioner

    possible · Doable with tools and a free afternoon

    How to check: With the engine running, watch the tensioner arm from a safe distance. If it bounces or shakes a lot, it is no longer holding the belt tight.

  3. Fluid leaking onto the belt

    less likely · A mechanic’s job

    How to check: With the engine off, look for oil, coolant or power steering fluid wetting the belt or pulleys. A wet belt slips no matter how new it is.

Be careful

Keep hands, hair and loose clothing well away from the belt and fan whenever the engine is running.
