My engine is overheating

The temperature gauge is climbing into the red, or you see steam from under the hood. Driving on an overheating engine can ruin it.

How to check: Once the engine is completely cool, look at the coolant overflow tank. Below the MIN line, or puddles of green, orange or pink fluid under the car, mean coolant is escaping.

How to check: If the coolant is full but the gauge climbs into the red within a few minutes of starting, even on an easy drive, the thermostat may not be opening. Don’t touch the hoses to check — they can be scalding.

How to check: If it overheats mostly in traffic but is fine on the highway, watch the fan behind the grille with the engine warm and the A/C on, keeping hands and loose clothing well clear because an electric fan can start at any moment. It should spin.

How to check: Coolant dripping from the front of the engine, white sweet-smelling exhaust smoke, or coolant that keeps disappearing with no puddle all need a mechanic.

Be careful

Never open the radiator cap or coolant reservoir on a hot engine — the coolant is under pressure and can scald you. Wait until the engine is cool to the touch. Coolant is poisonous and tastes sweet to pets, so wipe up every spill.
