My engine cranks but won’t start

The engine turns over normally but never catches and runs. That usually means it is missing fuel, spark, or the key signal.

Likely causes — tick the parts you want

  1. Out of fuel, or a gauge that reads wrong

    How to check: Check the fuel gauge, and think about when you last filled up. If it is near empty, add a couple of gallons from a gas can and try again.

  2. A key fob with a dead battery, or a key the car does not recognize

    possible · Most people can do this

    How to check: Watch for a flashing key or security light on the dash while you crank. Try the spare key, or hold the fob right against the start button if your car has one.

  3. A failed fuel pump or fuel pump relay

    possible · A mechanic’s job

    How to check: Turn the key to on without cranking and listen near the back seat for a two-second hum. No hum at all can point to the fuel pump or its relay.

  4. A failed crankshaft position sensor or ignition problem

    How to check: If the check-engine light is on or came on recently, have the code read. A stored code will point toward the sensor or ignition part involved.
