My A/C blows warm air

The air conditioning runs but the air coming out isn’t cold. Most often the system is low on refrigerant from a leak.

Likely causes — tick the parts you want

  1. Low refrigerant from a leak

    How to check: If the A/C slowly got weaker over weeks or months, a leak is likely. Refrigerant is regulated and handled with special equipment, so leave this one to a mechanic.

  2. An A/C compressor or clutch that isn’t engaging

    How to check: With the engine running and the A/C on max, keep hands clear of the belt and fan and look at the front of the A/C compressor. The center of its pulley should spin with the belt — if it sits still, the compressor is not engaging.

  3. A clogged cabin air filter

    less likely · Most people can do this

    How to check: If the air is cool but barely blowing, pull the cabin air filter (usually behind the glovebox) and look at it. Leaves and gray dust mean it is choking the airflow.
